How to Remove Ink Stains from Your Carpet (Marker, Pen & India)

carpet-one-floor-home-roseville-chico-ca-flooring-tips-tricks-remove-ink-stainHave you been the victim of an ink stain? Try not to explode along with your pen. The written word may live on forever, but an ink stain doesn't have to be permanent. Roseville Carpet One recommends that you use the cleaning methods in this article for the safe removal of an ink stain.

This article is addressing ink stains that are caused by a marker, pen or india ink, a particularly stubborn type of ink stain as this it often has a binding agent such as gelatin or, more commonly, shellac added to its formula, making the ink more durable once it has dried — and that much more difficult to remove from carpeting!

Plus, many carpets are made of synthetic fibers which, although durable, can retain the stain more stubbornly than natural fibers. Therefore, the first step in removing an ink stain is to identify the type of material that is stained. Review the information and care instructions from your carpet manufacturer.

Timing is everything when it comes to getting ink stains out of carpeting. The longer you let ink soak into the fibers, the harder it will be to eliminate the stain. What's more, applying heat to ink stains will make the removal process twice as difficult, as the heat sets the stain deeper into the material.

Roseville Carpet One offers the following tips for optimal ink stain removal:

Method One for Cleaning

  1. APPLY a dry cleaning solvent onto a damp towel
  2. BLOT don't rub
  3. REPEAT solvent application as above-do not apply directly to carpet
  4. BLOT don't rub
  5. APPLY water with damp towel
  6. BLOT to finish with a weighted pad of paper towels

Method Two for Cleaning

  1. SCRAPE or blot up excess spill
  2. APPLY detergent solution onto a damp towel
  3. BLOT don't rub
  4. APPLY white vinegar (undiluted) using a damp towel
  5. BLOT to finish with a weighted pad of paper towels
